Experiential DD on MGM

Before the pandemic I was a regular poker room patron at MGM National Harbor. They shut down for months but just recently reopened, and more recently opened their poker room back up to the general public.
Now before the pandemic, MGM National Harbor was always packed pretty much 24/7. It’s one of their newer properties and definitely the nicest casino in the DMV area (only other options locally are shitty and older Maryland LIVE and some places in West Virginia you don’t want to go to).
I arrived there last night at 9 PM, which normally would be prime time. Definitely not hoppin’ like it used to be. High roller table games were mostly empty. The slots were operating at maybe 50% max capacity because every other one was turned off to allow distance between the players, but it was very noticeable that even with the reduced number operating most were not being used.
They installed hand washing stations throughout the property around all the games but honestly I barely saw anyone using them which was not good. Face masks are mandatory, but they make you pull down your mask when you enter the casino area and take a picture of your face. All dealers for table games and poker wear plastic face shields. There are plexiglass dividers between dealers and players on most table games, but the side effect of that is definitely less players per table than normal. Spectators are no longer allowed to hang around, you’re only allowed to be at the table if you’re playing. The lack of spectators will have a dampening effect on the enthusiasm of players at certain table games. In fact, the whole energy of the casino was low. Imagine playing craps with no spectators.
Didn’t seem like they could be selling as much alcohol, the lobby and casino bars had earlier closing hours and at 9 PM on a Saturday I was able to walk up to any of the open bars and get a drink immediately, no long lines like the good old days.
The only section of the casino that was more active than usual was the race book which was odd because usually that’s only at half capacity at best when I’ve been in the past.
As for my poker experience, it was interesting. They removed about 25% of the tables they used to have on the floor to allow for distancing, and it’s now maximum 7 players to a table instead of 9. You do the math, they are definitely not making nearly as much off the poker room as they used to be able to. Plus, with 7 players instead of 9 and the lengthy swap out process for players who get knocked out (an attendant has to come and sanitize the seat for you and it took a long time) there were more hands than usual that were played with a reduced rake because there were less than 5 players active.
On top of that, because of the reduced seat capacity the wait list for the 1-3 tables (the most popular) took hella long and people were giving up on the wait and leaving. Also it was very apparent that the higher blind tables were much less in demand, they barely had any waits and that would be unheard of pre-pandemic. That means that the poker players showing up there intend to put less money on the table now.
The poker playing experience is still good if it’s what you like, I was able to enjoy myself despite all the plexiglass alienation. However I don’t know how long they can run this poker room without a COVID-19 case eventually being traced to it, because despite all the effort of distancing and sanitization, they still don’t have a good solution for keeping the chips themselves clean. Unless you neurotically sanitize your hands every time you rake chips, which I guess you could but most people weren’t/won’t, you’re at risk. I played for at least three hours and never saw any type of sanitation of the chips. The only solution I can think for this would be if you had contactless betting where you are separated from your stack, you verbalize your bets and the dealer moves everybody’s chips for them. That would be a big hassle for the dealer and I don’t think players would like it at all but I don’t know how else you could otherwise reduce that risk.
TL;DR - I have no MGM position and don’t intend to open one but I think there’s going to be a rude awakening when ER comes around because people have been piling back into MGM like everything is back to normal. Just because MGM has reopened its properties does not mean it’s anything like it was before. They are operating with many handicaps that will make it literally impossible to achieve anything near pre-pandemic earnings, and this is not going to change any time soon. I also think it’s highly likely they will run into trouble when a COVID-19 case is officially traced to their properties from a gamer that handled chips.

Any poker rooms near the outer banks (Virginia/North Carolina)?

I'll be in the outer banks in a couple weeks on vacation, was wondering if there were any nearby casinos. My googling found the closest one being in Raleigh about 3.5 hours away, which is probably farther than I want to drive. Thanks in advance.

Got less than max value from Quad Aces because of MGMNH High Hand Promo, curious what people think

tl/dr: Flopped Aces full, turned Quads, got paid well on river, but missed out on high hand promo by not fully understanding the casino rules which state that the high hand only pays if it's made up of both of your hole cards (K on river counterfeited my kicker).
It’s my first time playing at MGM National Harbor, and first time playing at a live casino with a high hand promotion (I’m primarily an online player). I’ve been at a 1/3 table for seven hours and have been overall playing pretty well (at that point I’m up around $250 even after starting the night down $300 when my KK lost to ATs all in on flush draw flop). Table has been fairly loose and passive recently, and I’d been mostly playing tight, raising very big with premium hands to get heads up or three way and over-limping small PPs, small Axs, and suited connectors. Main villain in the hand was fairly new to the table, I noticed that in position he was liable to stab at limped pots that no one seemed to want, and he had also paid me off for three streets when I squeezed over 2 limps to $20 from BB with AQs and bet medium-large amounts on an Q-high rainbow flop (he sighed and showed KQo after calling ¾ river bet).
On to the hand:
Table is 6 handed, effective stack is ~$230. First two players fold, CO limps, BU calls, Hero completes in SB with A2hh, BB checks. I didn’t want to raise with this hand because I was sure that CO and BU would call, and BB could call too, even if I pumped it up quite high. These guys would call a big raise with garbage like A7o, so I wouldn’t even be that happy hitting my ace on the flop. Therefore just calling seemed like the right play.
Flop comes AsAc2c, and I try not to look too excited after flopping a full house. I worry that no else has an ace and would easily fold if I led out, so I check hoping that someone will bet the flop with an A (that I now crush), 22 (which I will stack), a flush draw, a PP, or even air trying to take down the pot. The CO does just that, betting $8 into a pot of $12, and the BU quickly folds.
Decision Point #1: Call or Raise?
I elect to call, given that I had just taken down a big pot against villain by playing a good hand in a very obvious way, and I really worried that I would fold out the PPs and airy bluffs, and maybe even the flush draws. I didn’t really think he had an Ace, but that’s easy to say in retrospect. If he did have an Ace, this hand could potentially get raised and re-raised all-in on the flop, which would be ideal, and some players might think it would be crazy to raise this flop with an A and would paint me as bluffy and try to play back at me. I might make that play against a different player and/or if I was seen as having a bluffier image, but it didn’t feel right at the time.
Turn comes Ad. I have quad Aces! I now belatedly realize that my hand qualifies for the $300 high hand promotion that runs every 30 minutes, of which I had only been made vaguely aware and hadn’t seen hit at my table. The minimum requirement for the high hand Bonus was Aces full (which I flopped on the flush), but of course your high hand has to hold up against the possibility of anybody else at the poker tables making a better hand in the same 30 minute interval. The time is roughly 7pm, so there was 15 minutes left in the current High Hand period, and nobody had hit anything yet so even the nut low high hand I hit on the flop would have qualified. It’s also worth mentioning that the casino was pretty packed, and I’d noticed that most of the winning high hands (which seemed to hit a lot) were always something like Quad 7s or above, so Aces full may not be likely to survive another 15 minutes.
In any case, I now turn Quads, and know that I’ve most likely made another $300 on top of whatever this pot is. I decide to check to the bettor, not wanting to play out of flow and make him suspicious. Of course I was worried he would check behind, but I was very sure that he would continue firing, as there was no way he could put me on a hand as strong as quads. If he has a PP, he thinks he’s value betting my deuce, flush draw, or maybe even something like Kx hoping for a good kicker at showdown. If he’s on a draw or bluff, I want him to think he can barrel me off. So I check and villain bets $25 into a pot of $38.
Decision Point #2: Call or Raise this turn bet?
Just like on the flop, I worry that a raise to any decent sized value might scare away my opponent, who of course can’t have an A but could still be bluffing, have a weak full house, or be on a draw. I also consider that if I raise turn to something like $70 or $80 and get called, I would definitely be going all-in on the river and I think it may be pretty easy for villain to fold if he has one of the weaker hands he could hold or misses any draw he might be on. Conversely, if I just call, I think there’s a decent chance villain will bet on a lot of rivers if checked to him (either as a bluff or if his draws got there), and then I can check raise all-in and put him a tough spot that may be harder to fold.
So I elect to call again, the pot is now $88, and we’re on to the river, which is the Ks.
I semi-tank check (hoping villain thinks I’m contemplating a bluff on the K scare card), and villain pretty quickly bets $50. He also seems fairly confident in the hand, so I’m really hoping he hit a king on the river and thinks he has the nuts. I wait for a bit, trying to look unsure, and then go all-in for his remaining ~$140. He looks pained, tries talking to me and asking if I have quads, but I try to remain impassive and look at the flop. Eventually he calls, I flip over the A2, and he angrily shows the K9cc. I imagine he thought he was catching a crazy bluff or at least chopping another K.
So I think the hand itself is interesting in a vacuum when considering the most exploitative line to play, given that quads are so rare and so unexpected that you can make a lot of money from players who think they’re bluff catching with a full house or at worse just chopping.
But here’s where the high hand bonus wrinkle comes into play. After I show quads, the dealer and a reg at the table start telling me that I made a big mistake because the high hand promotion is only valid if the hand includes both of the player’s hole cards, not just one. In my case, the river K meant the 2 in my hand didn’t matter, and therefore I wasn’t eligible to win the $300 high hand bonus. I’m a little in shock, given that I hadn’t heard about that aspect of the promo. According to the dealer, if I had raised on the turn and the villain mucked, I could then show down my A2 on the AAA2 flop and thus be eligible for the high hand bonus. I also could have raised the flop, got a fold, and showed down the flopped full house for the much lower Aces-full high hand.
So while I overall made $246 from the hand (before subtracting the rake and dealer tip), I could have made $317 if I raised the flop, villain folded, and my aces-full held on for 15 minutes, and I could have made $342 if I check-called flop than raised my quad Aces and villain folded.
My question, then, is how should I have played this hand if I knew about the high-hand bonus and its exact requirements?
It strikes that there are two related questions here.
On the flop, I get the lowest possible high hand, with another 15 minutes to go at a busy casino where I have to think the odds of my hand holding on are not great. However, literally every card except for the two remaining 2s and the case A counterfeit the 2 in my hand, so I would no longer be eligible anyway. In this case, do I sacrifice the value I could get from the villain in the hand by raising and hoping for the high hand? How close to the high hand period’s end should I make that move? With 10 minutes left? With 5 minutes?
On the turn, now that I know the rules, I think a turn raise in this exact spot is super obvious, given that basically every river counterfeits my high hand, AND Quad Aces are highly unlikely to lose to a better high hand in the next 15 minutes. Plus, if I raise a good amount here and get called, there’s still a chance I can win a big pot if villain gets something good on the river. The real question, though, is should I have lead on the turn when I hit quads? I really don’t want villain to check back and cause me to lose the high hand bonus, so can I just tell villain that I have quads and I’d rather get the promo money than his money? Can I even show him my hand if he thinks I’m just bluffing? I imagine this is casino-specific, so if anyone knows how this works at MGMNH (or at other places in AC or Vegas) I’d love to know.
Final question, how bad does your kicker have to be to sacrifice value in order to save your hand from getting counterfeited on the river? Let’s say I had A8s in this exact spot, do I lead turn and tell villain, check-raise turn and tell villain, or check-raise normally and hope that a low card comes on the river and I can thus stack my opponent AND get the bonus. I never get to this spot having limped pre-flop with AK, AQ, or AJs, so the worst A I have here is probably ATo or maybe AJo if I was feeling passive.
Sorry if this was a wall of text, but there are a lot of interesting out-of-game variables I’d never had to consider before when playing online, and I’m curious what people think.

Ready for Live 2/5 or 5/5

I made a post about Bankroll Management several years ago and it's something I've stuck to myself ever since I started playing cash games online at 1 cent 2 cents on PokerStars over 10 years ago.
This can be a contentious issue with many players because many prefer just to play whatever they want or don't think it's necessary. To each his or her own, but I think the main benefit of bankroll management is that it (1) helps prevent you from going busto and (2) it helps you statistically realize whether or not you are a winner at the stakes you play.
So, in a nutshell, it has taken a while to win the buyins @ $1/$3 and lower stakes to be fully "rolled" for a $500 buyin, which is $15,000 (30 buyins times $500), mostly because the closest casino to where I live is almost 2 hours away one way so I don't get to play nearly as often as I would like. It's also a rock garden and making money isn't always as easy as it would be other places. I host a home game (no rake), but it is usually for just fifty cents and a dollar blinds. I also go through phases where I can't host it for various reasons. But after recently finishing the most successful poker trip I've been on to MGM National Harbor I've finally won the necessary requisite of buyins to justify moving up to $2/$5 or $5/$5 which would be a $500 100bb buyin.

I've done a lot of casual research over the years and I believe that LA has the best $5/$5 games so I am hoping to plan a mini-trip out there sometime in the next 6 months hopefully. Plus my wife has connections out that way, so I can probably get a free place to sleep.
If you have never played in a casino before and want to stick to bankroll management, I suggest going the home game route for smaller stakes first and try to win at least a few grand if you can. If you play $1/$2 or $1/$3 like many of us and you're also wanting to play higher stakes, I highly recommend tracking your results and trying to win $15k.

Is there etiquette on watching foot fetish videos at the table?

Just got back from a six hour sesh at the MGM National Harbor. There is a reg sitting to my right who was using his phone mostly to txt for the first few hours. At one point he put his phone on the rail and was watching a video.
I glanced down and saw a guy dressed in a white karate uniform massaging a woman’s feet. The video was zoomed in on the feet. It was kind of shitty quality and looked to be from the 90’s. I assumed it happened to be a weird scene from a movie. Ignore it and keep playing.
About an hour and a half goes by and I glanced down at the phone again and it’s the same actors and setting, and the man is still massaging a foot. For the next hour, I can’t stop glancing down at his screen. This fucking guy was watching foot fetish films for well over two hours.
Is there etiquette on this? Is it ok to say “hey man can you watch something else” or “hey bro can you put your phone away”? He seemed very into it. I think it was an unintentional angle shot.
Casinos are strange places.

First time playing live!! 1/3NL at mGM national harbor

Good morning to some of you! As a previous MTT/low stakes cash grinder, I've probably played 200k hands or so. Not a whole lot, but enough to establish some fundamentals. I'm currently grinding my life away in 10NL for 3-5bbs an hour lately. I find 2-4 tabling online to be very taxing after a few hours, and my gameplay drops significantly.
Took 300$ with me to MGM National Harbor tonight and it was a blast. As a 21 year old, this was my first time inside a casino, and I can definitely see how some never leave. One thing about my game is that I didn't feel very anxious - yet was very shaky. I felt in over my head at some points early on in terms of simply keeping up with everything that's going on, establishing any reads, piecing reads together street by street, etc. It all started to feel like a blur. Thankfully, my tight play paid off as I hit a few big hands and played them thin for value, resulting in bluffs paying me off (yes very vague, about to head to bed).
All in all, after 3 hours I ended +$152. Very excited about that, but definitely felt a bit overwhelmed with the environment being much different.
2 general questions, Is there anything specific I can do to try and stay more calm/less shaky/zoned in at the table?
I understand that my game needs a ton of work in terms of adjusting to live, and would greatly appreciate any advice/tools to help me improve my overall 1/3 game.
Thanks so much for anyone who took the time to read this!

$MGM Dip. Buy it

Pretty sure MGM dropped today because the February Maryland Casino results came out and MGM came out second.
This casino's been open for 3 months. Opened Dec 8, raked in 53 million that month. January cooled off a bit for 48.8 million. For the month it was the best in MD by 5 million. February MGM National Harbor had gaming revenue of 45.7 million, losing to Maryland Live by .5 million.
You may be thinking "That's bad news! That's a 6% decline in gaming revenue!".
IS it though?
The answer is NO. Why?
Because Feburary has less days.
December: 53/24 = 2.208 million per day
January: 48.8/31 = 1.57 million per day
Feburary: 45.7/28= 1.63 million per day.
Other investors are retarded. They seriously forgot that January has more days than Feburary. Profit off this by buying MGM now.
Ex Dividend is tomorrow too.

Disclaimer: I lost a bunch of people money on MGM already. I've only included the amount that I've bought today in the proof screenshot, frankly, because I'm embarrassed about how much I've lost on the other positions I've bought earlier. Let's just say it was a lot.
You have less than 2 hours to buy MGM.

I played in the $580 buy-in $500k guaranteed at MGM National Harbor a few days ago and wanted to see if anyone else could recommend some good guaranteed MTTs on the east coast (and the time of year during which these occur). I'm looking for stuff w/ a $250k+ guarantee.
I'm pretty new to the whole tournament scene and want to build out a schedule for the year. Thanks!

I want this season to start so badly

First of all I apologize for the Lombardozzi April Fools thing, I know that a lot of us care very deeply for him and it was a bit of a low blow. But I am sitting at my desk with lots of work to do so I am going to list a few reasons why I am so excited for baseball this year.
  1. Bryce Harper- I mean c'mon we are so lucky we get to see him play every day. I have a friend that lives in San Francisco and he cannot wait for them to play there just so he can see Bryce. I think some of us take for granted how special it is to see him every day.
  2. Anthony Rendon-I had serious Rendon withdrawals last year. After getting hurt in spring training he was a shell of himself the entire year. I think he is going to have a huge year.
  3. Ben Revere-Span was a fantastic lead off man but we finally have a real speed threat. Whoever is batting second is going to get lots of RBI off singles when Revere scores from first.
  4. Dusty Baker-I will admit I was disappointed with the hire at first. Really wanted Bud Black. But the more I have been exposed to Dusty the more I have grown to like him. I don't think we need a manager that is going to make the savvy sabermetrics moves. I think we need a manager that will bring the clubhouse together and thats what we got with Dusty.
  5. Nationals Park- Its getting to the point where I miss sitting in the 395 bridge traffic before the game. I love the place. The area around the park is finally getting to the point where it should be. It looks like they worked hard this off season improving the park and I cannot wait to spend my summer at the soon to be MGM National Harbor Casino Field at Maryland Live! Park.
  6. No pressure- I am happy that all the expectations are on the Mets this season. I honestly would not trade our roster for theirs. Yes they have the edge in rotation, but the ceiling for our lineup is so much higher than theirs. I think that they will struggle to score runs again and will lose a lot of 2-1 and 3-2 ball games. Meanwhile with no pressure on our bats I think we can score 5 runs a game.
  7. Budweiser- My dad raised me to be a Budweiser man and while I admit that craft beer is better, I cannot wait to crush 5 dollar happy hour Bud Lights this year. I can tolerate Miller Light but Bud Light is my passion.
  8. Winning the division- I expect to win the division this year. I think our bullpen will be better than expected and we are due for a year without the baseball gods ravishing our team with injuries. I think we can win 90+ games this year and I can't wait to do it with all of you at /Nationals. Lets go Nats.
If you need a reason not to be productive go ahead and list why you are excited for baseball. It sure does beat work.
