We are NCAA.com bracket specialists, back for year two of answering your questions about March Madness history, trivia, and bracket picking advice.

Happy March Madness! We are data reporters from NCAA.com, back for the second year. Ask us anything about NCAA tournament history, trivia, or bracket picking advice.
This year, we partnered with Google Cloud to produce more than 60 stories focused on helping you make better bracket choices. We look at how your bracket would perform if you only picked the higher seed, why Virginia is not a good choice to win the title, how many upsets you should pick each round, how to pick your bracket based solely on each team’s mascot, and much, much more.
You can find all of this at BracketIQ, our site devoted to bracket knowledge. There, you can also use our Matchup Analysis Tool to compare any two teams in the field to see how they stack up. And when you’re feeling confident in your ability to pick a perfect bracket (despite the 1 in 9.2 quintillion odds), head to the Bracket Challenge Game, the official bracket game of March Madness. If you sign up through the app (Android, iOS), not only does the Bracket Challenge Game let you watch every March Madness game right from your bracket, but you can get personalized push notifications to let you know which games to watch based on your bracket and how it will affect your standings within your groups. You can also pit your bracket against Andy Katz’s or Charles Barkley’s.
If you missed it, the 2018 NCAA tournament bracket was revealed yesterday.
Yearly reminder: We are NOT the selection committee, and had absolutely nothing to do with who made the tournament.

Extremely Biased Previews: The 2019 ACC Tournament

Hey friends, the wonderful month of March has arrived which means basketball, basketball, and more basketball. Through months of either saving money or very stiff negotiation and haggling tactics (you can decide which), I will be attending this year’s conference tournament of the Atlantic Coast in Charlotte. And what better way to celebrate this wonderful moment in the history of western civilization than bringing back my not quite popular, not quite demanded, and not quite professionally professional predictions of all the action I’ll be seeing through squinted eyes up in the nosebleeds? Here’s your bracket, let’s do this.
Game #1 - No. 12 University of “Left the turnover chain in the airport” Miami vs No. 13 Wake “No longer in Wake Forest, NC” Forest: Miami PG Chris Lykes finishes with 26 points and 11 assists after WF head coach Danny Manning leaves the sidelines to take a phone call from Kansas head coach Bill Self, who offers Manning an assistant coaching position.
Final Score: Miami defeats Wake Forest (70-58)
Game #2 - No. 10 Georgia “You can always look at the glass half empty or half full. I like to look at it as overflowing.” Tech vs No. 15 Notre “What do you mean Pitt’s not the 15 seed again?!?” Dame: The Fighting Irish’s men’s team miss their flight so Mike Brey decides to call the women’s team to take their place. Having to battle lack of rest and difficulty adjusting to the men’s rules, the women nearly pull off the win until Michael Devoe knocks down two threes and the game sealing free throws. GT head coach Josh Pastner spends the entire post game interview trying to convince the courtside reporter that he isn’t Michael Scott.
Final Score: Georgia Tech defeats Notre Dame (58-52)
Game #3 - No. 11 Boston “Neutral in the Reddit Gif War of 2019” College vs No. 14 University of “Currently hanging their ‘Survived The Kevin Stallings Era’ banner from the rafters’” Pittsburgh: Bill Walton wanders into the building and joins commentary, wondering when Boston College joined the Pac-12. He eventually starts to ramble on the importance of zombie apocalypse awareness and how zombies running on giant hamster wheels can be an alternative source of power. This is more entertaining than the game at hand.
Final Score: Pitt flushes Boston College (64-55)
Game #4 - No. 8 NC "Even when he loses, Kevin Keatts is still a winner" State vs No. 9 Clemson "Wait, why are there hoops where the field goal posts should be?" University: Look y’all, I know I like to mess around and give these weird and goofy predictions involving State but I’m legit nervous here. State’s in the middle of the bubble and I, like many other Pack fans, live with the ultimate fear, a fear I’d wish on my worst enemy (No, that’s not a typo). A fear of being forced to watch the NIT. If my last two tournament-related shitposts are anything to go by, absolutely none of my predictions involving State will come true so uh... let's pretend we score 24 points again. Does that work for everyone? Cool. Here's a photo of Mark Gottfried's profile on Bumble.
Final Score: Clemson memes NC State to death (47-24)
Game #5 - No. 5 Virginia “Channeling the power of Metallica” Tech vs. No. 12 University of “Channeling the power of Pitbull” Miami: Due to a freak accident involving a pineapple and the VTCRI Shuttle, four more VT players will be forced to sit out. This leaves Tech to start the game at a 4v5 disadvantage. Buzz Williams smirks and mutters to himself “Guess the game’s even now.” Down six at the half, Kerry Blackshear sprains his knee in Zion-like fashion after his shoe implodes walking to the locker room. Despite the increasingly growing odds and constant injures taking places during the game, walk-on Brendan Palmer is the lone gobbler standing for Tech in a seemingly impossible 1v5 matchup. Not only does he single-handedly climb out of a 10 point deficit, he also make the game winning buzzer beater to the shock of the entire crowd. The Hokie Club fundraises a statue on campus in his honor.
Final Score: A Goddamn Miracle
Game #6 - No 7. University of “No longer eats at Papa John’s” Louisville vs No. 10 Georgia “Sometimes I will start a sentence and I don’t even know where it’s going.” Tech: Georgia Tech tries to reenact the basketball episode of The Office to the amusement of Chris Mack, who watched said episode as a scouting report. Jordan Nwora finishes with a quadruple double despite nearly blowing a 15 point lead. Sometimes I like to take a single check out of my checkbook and staple it to my face.
Final Score: Louisville survives Georgia Tech (73-71)
Game #7 - No. 6 Syracuse “Shooting enough bricks to build a suburban neighborhood” University vs No. 14 University of “Eating less shit than usual” Pittsburgh: Jim Boeheim pays Kevin Stallings to dress up as a Pitt cheerleader to distract free throw shooters. It works a little too well as nearby spectators become violently ill at the sight of the former Pitt Basketball coach in a skimpy uniform. The refs are forced to turn away as Boeheim hacks the production truck’s controls and makes the commentators sound like chipmunks. This gives Syracuse no tactical advantage whatsoever.
Final Score: Syracuse beats Pitt and the crowd (56-51). But at what cost?
Quarterfinals #1 - No. 1 University of “Petitioning to end all 1v16 matchups” Virginia vs. No. 9 Clemson “Is not a 16 seed” University: The game gets delayed in the first half after a Clemson fan hacks the jumbotron to show footage of Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney spanking the Alabama mascot while repeatedly yelling "WHO'S YOUR DADDY?" In the second half, Tony Bennett’s charm distracts Clemson’s free throw shooters and fuels Kyle Guy to make 8 consecutive three pointers, finishing with 56 points and 13 made threes.
Final Score: UVA makes an example out of Clemson (84-27)
Quarterfinals #2 - No. 4 Florida “Our coach has a fountain of youth in his backyard” State vs. No. 5 Virginia “I miss Frank Beamer” Tech: FSU wins by forfeit after Palmer cracks his skull trying to do a backflip off a table to impress an FSU cheerleader.
Final Score: I mean... Brendan Palmer still scored a date
Quarterfinals #3 - No. 2 University of North “That guy who brings an acoustic guitar to a frat party and only plays Wonderwall” Carolina vs No. 7 University of “The drunk guy who breaks said guitar over the guy’s head” Louisville: Coby White no shows the game after a hotel housekeeper mistakes him for a feather duster. Luke Maye’s 20/20 performance and Kenny Williams’s stifling defense completely overmatch the Cardinals as Carolina fans in my section makes constant Mark Gottfried jokes to me all while repeatedly claiming that State and UNC are not, in fact, rivals. No it doesn’t bother me at all, why do you ask?
Final Score: UNC dadgums Louisville (85-68)
Quarterfinals #4 - Duke "ZION WILLIAMSON LIKES ANIME CARTOONS" University vs Syracuse “Don’t care, you ain’t Zion Williamson” University: Boeheim tries to switch Zion’s industrial-grade, steel-toed shoes with an old pair of Nikes held together by rubber bands and pony wishes before being caught by the referees and an ESPN cameraman. ESPN dedicates an hour of Sportscenter applauding Zion for overcoming such dastardly tactics while Boeheim is suspended for an NCAA tournament game and forced to listen to a 24 hour podcast of Dick Vitale ranting about LSU and the FBI. Meanwhile, RJ Barrett scores 33 points.
Final Score: Syracuse gets freaking Zioned! (All of the points-not enough of the points)
Semifinals #1 - No. 1 University of “Took the phrase ‘slow and steady wins the race’ too seriously” Virginia vs. No. 4 Florida “Hired Willie Taggart” State: The game becomes tied at 69 with 6.9 seconds left. The mods will delete at least 30 posts containing screenshots of the scoreboard.
Final Score: UVA deletes FSU (71-69)
Semifinals #2 - No. 2 University of North “Thinks Kurt Cobain is the greatest guitar player alive” Carolina vs No. 3 Zion Williamson “Formerly known as Duke University" University: Duke phenom Zion Williamson and Zion Williamson's teammates absolutely Zion Williamson the fuck out of the Not Zion Williamsons as Zion Williamson's coach, Zion Williamson proceeds to cackle like a mad scientist in the Zion Williamson Arena after creating his evil, athletic army of Zion Williamsons.
Final Score: Zion Williamson out-Zions Not Zion Williamson (Zion Williamson-Zion Williamson)
Finals: Zion “Zion Williamson” Williamson vs. His Next Victim: Zion dunks on everyone, even his own teammates, and grows a foot taller. He goes on an unstoppable rampage and dunks on the entire crowd. Every employee that works for ESPN simultaneously moans in pleasure. He doesn’t hear the final buzzer and continuously grows. Zion Williamson is now the size of a skyscraper and has gained the ability to breath fire. His shoes rip again so he destroys a nearby Nike Factory Store in a fit of Zion-fueled anger. The US military tries and fails to calm him down. Zion is bored. He swims to Japan to dunk on Godzilla. He succeeds. Zion gained 69,696,969 experience points. Nice. Zion has leveled up to level nonillion. He is now so massive that he can use the Earth as a basketball. Zion uses the sun to heat up his Bojangles 12 piece Chicken Supreme box. It’s Bo Time! Zion travels through other galaxies in search of competition and accidentally dunks on the fabric of space and time. This creates a Zion Williamson-shaped black hole that destroys everything. Everything except Zion. There is no god. Only Zion Williamson.
Final Score: Zion Williamson murders the Universe (String cheese theory-King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard)
Also, Jack White finally makes a three pointer.

Eliminating Contenders To Find A Winner For The 2019 NCAA March Madness Tournament

Eliminating Contenders To Find A Winner For The 2019 NCAA March Madness Tournament
The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament is upon us once again and as always I will be breaking down 5 ways you can eliminate some top seeds from consideration. In picking potential final 4 teams and champions I find it much easier to eliminate teams from consideration to narrow down the selections. The criteria we will use to do this are as follows
  1. Preseason AP Rankings vs Current Rankings
  2. 3 Point Shooting
  3. Points Per Game
  4. Coaches Success
  5. Scoring Margin
1. Pre Season AP Rankings can predict tournament success
The following comes from a Nate Silver article in the NY Times before the 2011 tournament.
Since the tournament field expanded to 64 teams in 1985, there have been 41 cases in which a school that was unranked to start the season entered the tournament ranked in the A.P. top 10 (excluding a couple of cases where the team was ineligible for tournament play). These schools, as you might expect, were seeded highly: eight were No. 1 seeds and another 17 were seeded No. 2. Absolutely none of these teams have made the Final Four, however: they are 0-for-41. Instead, they have been the victims of some notorious upsets, like the No. 2-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks losing — by 13 points! — to the No. 15 seed Coppin State in the opening round of the 1997 tournament, and the No. 3 seed Wisconsin Badgers being one of Davidson’s victims in 2008. Three of the No. 1 seeds that fit this description — Michigan in 1985, St. John’s in 1986, and Cincinnati in 2002 — lost in the Round of 32.
Since this article, I have kept track of all qualifying teams.
2011 Notre Dame (2) lost in 2nd round to Florida 2012 Florida State (3) lost in 2nd round to Cincinnati 2013 Georgetown (2) lost in 1st round to Florida GC 2013 Miami (2) lost in 3rd round to Marquette 2014 Villanova (1) lost in 2nd round to Uconn 2014 Iowa St (3) lost in 3rd round to Uconn 2015 Maryland(4) lost in 3rd round to Kentucky 2015 N. Iowa (5) lost in 3rd round to Louisville 2016. Xavier (2) lost in 2nd round to Wisconsin 2016. Oregon (1) lost in Elite 8 to Oklahoma 2016. West Virginia (3) lost in 1st round to Stephen F. Austin 2016. Miami (3) lost in 3rd round to Villanova 2017. Baylor (3) lost in the 3rd round to South Carolina 2018. Virginia (1) lost to 16th seed UMBC in its first game 2018. Michigan (3) lost in the championship game
The record is now 1-55 for these teams to reach the Final 4. Last season Michigan became the first team to buck this trend. They did so by miraculously getting out of the rd of 32 game against Houston. Houston had a chance to go up 4 with a few seconds left but missed 2 FT's and Michigan answered with a 30 ft 3 point shot at the buzzer to win by 1. A painful game for me as I had Houston in a rather large Calcutta style pool.
Here are the preseason rankings for 2018-19
Current Teams in the top 10 not ranked in the preseason
3W Texas Tech
2. 3 Point Shooting
The 3 pt shot has become extremely important in both the NBA and college basketball.
Since 2007 no team who shoots under 30% from behind the arc has won a game in the tournament.
No teams qualify this season
Since 2007 only 5 teams shooting under 33% from 3 have made the elite 8. If you are not going to shoot the 3 well then you need to defend it well. In 2012 both Louisville and Ohio State made it to the final 4 with sub 33% 3 point shooting but both defended the 3 as good or better than they shot it. Louisville gave up 30.3% from 3 and Ohio State 32.5%. 2015 Kentucky was sub 33% but they defended it well at 32.5%. 2016 North Carolina broke this trend a bit with a poor 3pt shooting team that gave up 36% from 3.
Teams to be leery of 1E Duke - 30.2% 8E VCU - 30.7% 13E St. Louis - 30.8% 16E UNC Central - 31.1% 16W Prarie View - 31.5% 10E Minnesota - 32.1% 3E LSU - 32.3%
What is interesting here is how many teams in the East bracket are on this list including the number 1 overall seed Duke. When we look further into the numbers Duke is the 9th best team in the country at defending the 3 at 29.3%. Potential 2nd rd matchup VCU also defends the 3 really well. They give up 27.6% from behind the arc which is 3rd best in the country.
  1. Points Per Game
Playing defense is great but you will need to keep pace with great offenses come tournament time.
80 Teams have scored 73 PPG or less coming into the tournament and had a 1-4 seed. 11 made the final 4 with no champions.
Three seasons ago there was a change in the rules. The shot clock went from 35 to 30 seconds. This has caused more possessions and as such higher scoring. The average ppg per team since 2010 are as follows
2010-11 : 68.28 2011-12 : 67.25 2012-13 : 66.72 2013-14 : 70.10 2014-15 : 66.76 2015-16 : 72.29 2016-17 : 72.57 2017-18 : 72.98 2018-19 : 71.77
Scoring has increased by about 6.6%. If we add 6.6% of 73 to 73 we get an average ppg of 77.8. This is now the number needed to be exceeded in order to be a contender. To be conservative we will round down to 77.5 PPG. In 2015-16 Villanova was at 77.2 ppg entering the tournament and won it all. We want to be careful if teams are really close as this stat has obviously changed over time.
Here are the 1-5 Seeds and their PPG
https://preview.redd.it/zzeu66yoc6n21.png?width=215&format=png&auto=webp&s=9c06a2726cd9efbb90a48ac31bc1b6922478b207
The teams coming up short are 1S Virginia 2MW Kentucky 2W Michigan 3W Texas Tech 3S Purdue 3MW Houston 4E Virginia Tech 4W Florida St 4MW Kansas 4S Kansas St
4. Coaches Success Coaches are very important to the success of a team come tournament time. The great coaches tend to outperform their expectations.
This is taken from Pete at Bracket Science
Using tourney appearances and Elite Eight trips, I’ve come up with the following taxonomy of coaching types in the tourney:
Rookies – making their first trip to the tourney Novices – 2-5 tourney trips with no Elite Eight runs Prodigies – 2-5 tourney trips with at least one Elite Eight run Snake-bit – more than five trips with no Elite Eight runs Flashes – more than five trips with one Elite Eight run Destined – 6-10 trips with more than one Elite Eight run Veterans – more than 10 trips with 2-4 Elite Eight runs Legends – more than 10 trips with more than four Elite Eight runs
I’m focusing this analysis on one through six seeds, the seeds most likely to advance in the dance. A standard PASE analysis on the eight classes of coaches turned up these results:

https://preview.redd.it/98oewpmuc6n21.png?width=447&format=png&auto=webp&s=446d790fb9c30932bf3a8df1f301e4483dbda12c
As the chart shows the “snakebit” coaches are ones you will want to stay away from picking to make a deep run. Last season Cincinnati and Purdue fit this category and fell short of their seed expectations as 2 seeds.
This year’s teams with Snake Bit coaches with a 1-6 seed are:
6E Maryland 3S Purdue
  1. Scoring Margin
Using the PASE (Performance above seed expectations) stat from the now-defunct Bracket Science the number one determinant of being able to outperform your seed expectation is scoring margin.
129 teams have been a 1-4 seed and come into the tournament with a 15+ scoring margin. 51 have made the final 4 (39.5%) and 18 have won it all (14%) including Villanova last season (Virginia was at 14.2 and lost in their first game)

https://preview.redd.it/07dgzk6xc6n21.png?width=211&format=png&auto=webp&s=67af0c138488b159d7348756dff80f2d2ac26761
Of the 157 teams to get a 1-4 seed and have a scoring margin under 10 just 2 have won a title and 11 have gone to the final 4.
Last season 1W Xavier Out in Rd of 32 2W UNC Out in Rd of 32 3S Tennessee Out in Rd of 32 4S Arizona Out in Rd of 64
Teams under the 10ppg margin this season 3S Purdue 3E LSU 4W Florida St 4MW Kansas 4S Kansas St
Summary
31 Champions since 1985 have been a 1-4 seed with just 3 seeded higher. So for a potential champion, we should eliminate all teams seeded above 4.
From the above, we can eliminate the following top 4 seeds from championship contention;
Team (corresponding number from above that eliminated them from consideration)
1 Seeds 1E Duke (2) 1S Virginia (3)
2 Seeds 2MW Kentucky (3) 2W Michigan (3)
3 Seeds 3W Texas Tech (1,3) 3S Purdue (3,4,5) 3MW Houston (3) 3E LSU (2,5)
4 Seeds 4E Virginia Tech (3) 4W Florida St (3,5) 4MW Kansas (3,5) 4S Kansas St (3,5)
If we go by these numbers we have eliminated 12 of the top 16 teams as potential champions. I did mention in the 3 point section that while Duke does qualify as a potential upset victim because of poor 3 pt shooting they do hold opponents to a 3 pt% lower than what they shoot. We have seen in the past that this formula can work and since Duke is the favorite to win it all they could very well win it all. However, if you are participating in a bracket pool with a large number of entrants you may want to look to a team other than Duke.
The teams we have left are 1W Gonzaga 1MW UNC 2E Michigan St 2S Tennessee
Let's have a look at where the country is picking on ESPN
Almost 40% of brackets have Duke as a champion. If you have 100 entrants in your pool and you pick Duke to win it all you are going to be -EV on that bracket. The reason is Duke has about a 19% chance to win the championship according to 538. The Vegas odds show about a 29% chance of Duke winning it all. That number is juiced a bit as well. Regardless of what you look at, there is no way Duke wins this tournament 4 out of 10 times as the public is picking. Because of this, you want to be short Duke and find value elsewhere. Of course, Duke may win and you will lose all of your brackets but even if you pick Duke and they win the odds are good that you will not win your bracket anyway. If you insist on picking Duke (perhaps you are an alum) then you need to differentiate yourself elsewhere in the pool. Pick some early upsets and perhaps look for a long shot or 2 to make the final 4 and championship game.
With 1 team from each bracket remaining, I will probably be putting in a bracket with a final 4 that looks exactly like the above (I play a few different brackets to be diverse and increase my chances of winning). It is a bit chalky but without Duke, it will be different than most brackets in most pools.
In this bracket, I will eliminate Gonzaga based on the 83rd best Strength of schedule. They typically have a weak SOS coming out of a mid-major conference and this season is no different.
The way my bracket pool works is you get the seed multiplied by the rounds value. So a 1 seed gets half the points a 2 seed gets for each win. With that said I will go with Michigan St. and Tennessee in the final game with Michigan St winning it all. I think this gives me enough differential from other Michigan St winners. In a 100 person pool, I expect there to be 5-8 Michigan St champions picked. ESPN has it at 4.7% but knowing my pool there will be a few more than that. The percentage is still low enough that if they do win it all my chances of cashing are high (top 5 cash). I will be adding a few more brackets with some other champions. I am going to do more analysis in a future article on possible Cinderella picks. That will help you if you take mostly favorites in the final 4.
As always good luck and let me know who you are picking!

[OC] 2019 Draft Position Changes: Whose Stock Rose and Whose Fell

[OC] 2019 Draft Position Changes: Whose Stock Rose and Whose Fell
What is this?
This is an attempt to discover whose draft stock rose and whose fell over the course of the last year.
Why do this?
This was inspired by the many posters who have argued Cam Reddish made a mistake going to Duke because it hurt his draft stock. It got me thinking: has his stock really gone down? By how much? And how does that compare to others?

PART I: PRESEASON DRAFT STATUS

Method
I looked for mock NBA drafts that were published between the end of the NBA draft in June and the beginning of the college basketball season in November. Basically, I looked for all of the "way to early 2019 mock draft" sites. I found eight: Sports Illustrated, Bleacher Report (Wasserman), Bleacher Report (Aug 7), Forbes, SB Nation, TheSixerSense, NBAAnalysis, The Sportster
Why these sites?
Because they were the ones that turned up when I googled it. Lots of sites continually update their projections and don't have an archived version from last year. I only used sites that had a full first-round projection.
Is this scientific?
No. I didn't analyze which projections are the most accurate--I'm not FiveThirtyEight. But I pulled eight sites so that I could average them to get a general consensus of a player's draft status.
Why are so many guys listed as pick #45?
If a guy didn't appear in the mock draft I slotted him at 45. Why 45? Because that's the middle of the second round. I had no way of knowing if a guy was rated #31 or #60 (or worse), so this seemed like a simple way to do it.
Again, that seems unscientific.
Yes, it is. It's a rough estimate. If someone has a better idea and the time to do it, I'm all ears.
Preseason Consensus Draft Status:
Preseason Consensus Draft Status

PART II: POST-SEASON DRAFT STATUS

Method
Same as before. I used these eight sites: ESPN, TheStepien NBADraft.net, SportingNews, Bleacher Report, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, Busting Brackets
Why these sites?
Because they were available. And these are from more prominent sports websites. Again, averaging across the eight helped establish a consensus view. I'll note these sites may continue to update (some still include players who are returning to school), so the below table is as of April 12, 2019.
But you used a really dumb site and didn't even include my favorite one!
Yup. Just grabbed what was easily available. But adding one or two more probably wouldn't change the consensus status that much.
Post-Season Consensus Draft Status:

Post-Season Consensus Draft Status

PART III: CHANGE IN DRAFT STATUS

Ok, here come the results!

PART IV: CONCLUSIONS

Some guys rose, some fell, I'm not sure if there's a clear pattern. You tell me, that's what this discussion is for.
Really, no strong conclusions?
Fine, just one: this is the year of Jalen. It made it difficult when pulling this data to keep straight Jalen Smith, Jalen McDaniels, Jaylen Hoard, Jaylen Hands, and even Jalen Pickett. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if "Ja" Morant is short for "Jalen."

r/CBB Bubble Watch - Week 4

Welcome back for Week 4 of CBB’s Bubble Watch /CollegeBasketball

Thanks again to everyone who participated, apologies that it was an extra days wait for the results (we'll be back on schedule next week)! For those unaware of what is going on here, please check out the intro to Week 1 or Week 2 where I gave a full breakdown and answer some FAQs.
With just five or six regular season games left for most teams, we’re starting to near elimination game territory for certain bubble teams. With two new additions this week, we’ve officially locked 13 teams, but with two new additions (Oregon & Baylor) back by popular demand, our total tally of live teams stayed the same with 50. No eliminations this week, as teams like SMU, Marquette, and Utah flirted with disaster, but ultimately our voters have given them another shot. Our list is as comprehensive as can be, we now have every team with more than a 5% chance of getting an At-Large bid, as according to T-Rank’s T-Rankology page.
We’re only a month into the Bubble Watch’s life, but already I’ve learned a lot. I’ve made adjustments based on valid feedback in Weeks 1 and 2, fought for relevancy as Brennan returned to the fold and Gasaway took over his old post, and now I’ve realized this is just too much work for one man to do in his spare time each week. You might’ve seen on Monday’s post that I had a call for writers, thanks to all who reached out. Apologies to anyone who wasn’t picked, I tried to go with the people who demonstrated basketball knowledge, writing capability, and pro-activity.
Without further adieu, I’m happy to introduce three new writers to the CBB Bubble Watch:
Like I did, I’m sure these guys will continue to grow and adjust based on your feedback, but I think their first entries are already amazing, all the credit to them for jumping in and taking on a tough task with short notice. With my current time constraints, without them, this Watch wouldn’t have survived so I appreciate them volunteering their time and skill
Enough formalities, let’s jump into the Watch! As always, for those who are illiterate you can check out the results on the spreadsheet, and here are the Team Sheets

AAC American

The picture hasn’t changed much in the AAC: one clear lock, one borderline lock, three bubble teams. At this point, no one in the bottom tier of the American has much of a shot at a bid without a conference tournament victory. That’s a shame; UCF looked like a darn good team on occasion this year, boasting one of the nation’s most efficient defenses before their 7-and-a-half-foot terminator, Tacko Fall, succumbed to season-ending shoulder surgery. Teams up and down this league have been ravaged with injury in what could have been a season to remember for the conference. Now, the American will be lucky to get 4 teams in the tournament and could only see 2 get in if things shake out poorly for its bubble teams.
Wichita St [19-5 (9-3) | RPI: 19 | SoS: 57 | Proj Seed: 6]
The Shockers are doing what is required of them to get into the tournament, thrashing Connecticut and Memphis in consecutive games last week. At this point, it is difficult to see how Wichita St misses out. Their remaining schedule is tough but filled with opportunity, with two cracks against Cincinnati left for these guys to notch a marquee victory that would push their resume over the top and give their seeding a nice boost. The only notable pitfall would be losing to Tulane at home, and even if the Shockers drop that game (which they almost definitely won’t), their resume is still head-and-shoulders better than most of the actual bubble. Provided they take care of the games they should, they will be dancing.
Houston [19-5 (9-3) | RPI: 28 | SoS: 117 | Proj. Seed: 10]
Back on November 17th, Houston played a basketball game against Drexel on a neutral court. In that game, Houston put Drexel on the free throw line 31 times, and Drexel converted on 27 of those free throws on its way to handing Houston a loss, 84-80. Since that loss, Houston has played like a surefire tournament team: it is 9-3 in the American, 5-4 in Q1 games and rated in the top 30 by almost every predictive metric (Kenpom, BPI, etc.). This is a dangerous team that is hovering delicately above the cut line in most brackets. Cincinnati comes to town Thursday. A win would put Houston a step above most of the bubble fray. A loss would mean that this team, dangerous as it may be, will likely have a jittery Selection Sunday ahead of it.
Temple [15-10 (7-6) | RPI: 38 | SoS: 11 | Proj Seed: First Four Out]
Perhaps the weirdest resume in all of college basketball belongs to the Temple, a team that beat Clemson and Auburn back in November, both on neutral courts, and also a team that has lost 4 Q3-Q4 games and has looked frighteningly uncompetitive in some of its conference losses. This team has won five straight games, including dutiful blowouts against the dregs of the American, East Carolina and South Florida, this past week. Those games did nothing for Temple’s resume other than add to its rather shallow win total. This week, Temple gets Wichita St and Houston. Given the lack of opportunities on the rest of its schedule and this team’s propensity to lose games it shouldn’t, a sweep may be necessary.
SMU [15-10 (5-7) | RPI: 81 | SoS: 55 | Proj. Seed: Out]
This humble writer is surprised that SMU has remained on the page. At 5-7 in the conference and with an RPI in the 80s, anything short of winning out in the regular season seems like it would not be enough to get this team above the cut line. This is no longer the team that beat Arizona on a neutral court and Wichita St on the road. Unfortunately, the injury bug has been remarkably unkind to this already undermanned roster, and even if one feels compelled to give SMU a pass for some of its recent losses during which it was at less than full strength, at some point, that thought exercise must give way to on-court results. Which is a shame; this team showed that it can be incredibly dangerous when its full roster is available.

ACC ACC

The ACC doesn’t feel like it has the past few years with multiple dominant squads at the top. This is no slight on Virginia as they appear to be the real deal, but Duke, Clemson, UNC and Miami all expected at one point or another this season to compete with the elite, have struggled. Behind them are a host of talented squads, each with work to do to get in. We have five Locks or Shoulds for the ACC, but we’re likely looking at 8 or 9 tournament spots with ten teams competing. They’ll all have shots to win their way in, which will do it?
  • Locks - Virginia, Clemson, Duke
  • Should Be In - UNC, Miami
  • Work Left To Do - Louisville, Syracuse, Florida St., NC State, Virginia Tech
  • Eliminated - N/A
  • Unmentioned - Notre Dame, BC, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh
UNC [19-7 (8-5) | RPI: 9 | SoS: 3 | Proj. Seed: 3]
  • Best Wins - Clemson, Duke, @Tennessee, Ohio St.(n)
  • Bad Losses - Wofford
Let’s be honest, no team with a top 10 RPI and SoS is in danger of missing the tournament, but the inconsistency this team has shown has made our voters weary. UNC received just over 50% votes to Lock, and is likely one more win away from securing their spot. They will have three of their four remaining games on the road, including at Duke to end the season, though the worst RPI hit would probably be Syracuse so there’s not much to worry about.
Miami [18-6 (7-5) | RPI: 25 | SoS: 76 | Proj. Seed: 7]
  • Best Wins - MTSU(n), @NC State, @Virginia Tech
  • Bad Losses - @GaTech
While the loss in Chestnut Hill didn’t help their resume, BC’s been a tough out at home and their RPI being in the 80s prevents that from being a day ruiner. Miami is definitely not the same team without Brown, but Jim Larranaga’s squad has found a way to play without him. They missed a chance to jump to lock status with a loss to the Hoos at home, but will still get chances at Syracuse, UNC, and Tech to notch tournament level wins.
Syracuse [17-8 (6-6) | RPI: 39 | SoS: 34 | Proj. Seed: 11]
  • Best Wins - @Louisville, Buffalo, Virginia Tech
  • Bad Losses - @GaTech
Syracuse is about to enter the most important stretch of their schedule. For a team that’s lacking high-quality wins (just 1-4 in Q1 games), they’ll play four of their remaining six against elite opponents. They’ll travel to Miami this weekend and Duke the following week, while getting UNC and Clemson both at home. Grabbing one of those four is a must, two would be ideal, while still taking care of business against NC State and BC. That’d put them at 10-8 in conference with a couple top flite victories, likely pushing them over the edge.
Louisville [18-8 (8-5) | RPI: 41 | SoS: 44 | Proj. Seed: 10]
  • Best Wins - @FSU, Virginia Tech
  • Bad Losses - N/A
It’s odd when a 2-0 week tanks your RPI and drops you three seed lines, but when those wins come against GaTech and Pitt and came after a three game skid, voters and bracketologists can be forgiven. Three of their next four games come against RPI top-10 teams in UVa, UNC, and Duke, two at home, providing this Louisville squad a chance to pick up a true top victory. No losses outside the top-50, but just a 3-8 record in Q1 and Q2 games gives the Cardinals a surprisingly shaky resume.
Florida St. [17-8 (6-7) | RPI: 45 | SoS: 67 | Proj. Seed: 9]
  • Best Wins - North Carolina, Miami, @Louisville
  • Bad Losses - @Wake Forest
Back to back losses against Virginia and a struggling Fighting Irish team was a bad look for the Seminoles. Luckily, they have a strong case with a 5-4 record in Q1 games that is unlikely to be matched by many bubble teams. They get Clemson twice on their schedule, giving them a chance to add to their tally. If they can’t grab one against the Tigers, a win at NC State is a must to give them another quality win heading into the Conf. Tournament.
Virginia Tech [18-7 (7-5) | RPI: 56 | SoS: 110 | Proj. Seed: 10]
  • Best Wins - @Virginia, UNC, Washington(n)
  • Bad Losses - Saint Louis(n)
Buzz and the Hokies are now the current owners of the best win in College Basketball; a road win over the AP and RPI #1 overall team will go a long way on March 11th. How does the rest of their tournament profile stack up? A win over UNC at home is huge, as well as a solid 4-1 record in Q2 games, this bumps their overall record in Q1 and Q2 games to a respectable 8-6. Two chances against Duke remain as well as shots against Clemson, Louisville and Miami. Avoiding a loss at GaTech is a must, and I think they’ll need to win at least one of the remaining five to hit .500 in conference.
NC State [16-9 (6-6) | RPI: 72 | SoS: 63 | Proj. Seed: First Four Out]
  • Best Wins - Clemson, Duke, @UNC, Arizona(n)
  • Bad Losses - UNC-G, UNI(n)
They were the darlings of the early ACC slate with wins over UNC, Duke and Clemson, but things are beginning to look more dire in Raleigh. An 0-2 week is tough to have this late in the season, especially when one loss comes against a Bubble Competitor in Virginia Tech. There are no more chances for elite victories on the Wolfpack’s schedule, but they have enough, what they need is quantity to add to their quality. They’ll get that with chances against Syracuse, BC, Florida St, and Louisville. Avoiding losses to Wake or Georgia Tech is a must, but they’ll probably want to pick up two of the other four to get back into the tournament picture.
