Officially made it to Mississippi. Hitched a ride into tunica- lost a lot of money at the casinos and now am at a small deli to think over my choices. Any small town y’all recommend south of tunica that I should hit?
What is your wildest night at a Casino playing poker?
Mine was at Hollywood Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. December 2004. I checked into the Grand Casino RV Park and caught a shuttle to the Hollywood Casino. I heard the poker room was the best. It was that night. I won about ??K over the course of the night. I sat down at a 4/8 LH table with $200. I had gotten that up to $600 and drew pocket 77. Everyone was folding but a lady at the end of the table did a Max raise. I called. The flop was 778. Same lady, max bet. I called. Turn junk. Same lady max bet. I max raised her and she called. River A. She max bet and I max raised her and she raised back. We were both all in. She turned over pocket 8's. I showed and the dealer pushed the stack over to me. She started yelling and told the dealer to hold on until she could absorb it. Then she started calling me a cheater and the dealer a cheater and started yelling and pushing chairs around and standing up shaking her fists. The pit boss called security and they escorted her out of the poker room. I was shaking. The dealer was shaking. The boss halted play until they could look at the video. After 30 minutes the Boss pushed the stack to my spot and told me "Good Hand!" My $200 was now $1600. I took a break to smoke and started playing a $5 Three Hand Jacks or Better slot machine right out side the card room. Second play I lined up 4 aces with a two on the bottom row. Hold all, hit deal and won 6K. 2K each line. Went back in and sat in on a 10/20 NL with a $1000 buy-in. I hit everything I played for 11 hands. Then I coasted when it cooled off. There was one player with a bigger stack than me and I tangled with him a couple times until he shook his finger at me and said "I am staying away from you." He was a gruff looking player with a thick Brooklyn accent. Very aggressive. Several hands later a player complained openly about his play. He said OK and asked the boss to come to the table. He told the boss to move that player to another table because the player didn't like his play. The other player was moved. We took a break and the Brooklyn player stepped out for a smoke. A SWAT team of some kind took the guy down and put him in handcuffs and took him away. A guy in a suit came up to the table and put the guy's belongings in a bag and took them away. I never found out why. My winnings were now over 10K Cash and a 6K coupon. The table broke up and I stepped out to smoke at my favorite slot machine. I was loaded the bets up and I hit a 9 high straight club flush on the bottom row. Press Hold all, press deal, 8K per row. 24K over all. I put the coupon in my pocket. I went back to the card room and sat down at a 100/200 NLH and did real well but noticed I was faltering. I was drinking and I think I reached my limit. :) I noticed it was 2 AM so I cashed out my coupons at the Cashier and pocketed close to 50K. This had never happened before. I had some good nights at casinos in general but this was my best night ever. I went to the front of the casino and found out my shuttle back to the RV park was gone and did not run the rest of the night. I asked a Concierge about getting a ride back to the Park and he said he couldn't help me there. So, there I was with all that cash in my pocket. I was standing in the atrium and the room started spinning. I started noticing people hiding behind the columns out front. I saw people crouching behind the bushes and I remembered that woman from the earlier table and I freaked out. I ran to the hotel desk and asked if they had a room and told them what was going on....I gave them my players card and they comped me a suite and had security escort me up to it. I put my winnings in the room safe and passed out on the bed. I woke up to the front desk calling my room to ask if I wanted to stay another night because it was check out time and an RV shuttle was down stairs. I grabbed my money from the safe and checked out. I took a shower when I got back to the RV and started it up and headed to Biloxi, Mississippi. I heard there was a great tournament there that weekend. :) I spread some of my winnings out to close friends for Christmas then I coasted on the rest until I caught a Software gig in the PNW about May 2005. I haven't topped that yet and I'm now 67.
Hello, as a student at WashU taking a COVID-19 awareness class in Anthro 048, I am reaching out to mississippi to talk about Nativ American Healthcare on reservations in this state. It is quite a unique situation for those that live in Domestic Dependent Territories, the official name for the sovereign tribes that live on reservations in America. Even harder is how they are handling the Covid-19 outbreak. What more, American politicians thought they had this covered way back in 1976. According to Dr. Siobhan Wescott of Harvard Medical School and a Native American herself, a part of the Gerald Ford administration was focused on improving a treaty agrreemnt made a century ago in the times of Manifest Destiny. In the late 19th Century, when it was evident that Native American tribes would either be wiped out, or expelled to smaller and smaller territories, they set up a diplomatic treaty that afforded some Tribes sovereign agreement land, and what more, basic healthcare. This might surprise some because healthcare was not exactly what it is these days. But, it's important to remember that before mass colonization, the biggest killers of Indian Tribes were a disease. Smallpox killed hundreds of societies before conquerors could ever set foot on the land. Thus, it was in the best interest to provide a basic healthcare program so that medical aid could be provided to conserve the nations if the white man ever brought over more disease. (Source: https://www.ihs.gov/aboutihs/legislation/) Fast Forward to 1976 when Gerald Ford passed the Indian Health Care Improvement Act that was amended to Social Security to provide reimbursed Medicare services to all American Indians and Alaska Natives in the Indian Health Service and tribal healthcare needs (Source: https://www.medicaid.gov/medicaid/indian-health-medicaid/indian-health-care-improvement-act/index.html) Now, we are in the midst of one of the biggest outbreaks in modern history. Native Nations, like the Choctaw in Mississppi or the Cherokee a bit more north, containing the virus is quite hard due to how their infrastructure is. With limited local government or taxes, nations are unable to provide provisions to block this. More over, the hardest-hit nations like the Navajo cannot sufficiently close their borders because of public US interstates and roads. What more, the sovereign status of these lands that originally attracted low-sanctioned casinos and bars, do not have the means to shut down or provide practical guidelines for the pandemic. This economic pressure is what hurts a lot of the lower-class Native American Families. And if you're saying to yourself right now, this doesn't affect me because I'm not Navajo, think again: more than 40% of all tribes have casinos that support millions of jobs. Even in Mississippi. This is a warning if you think just because MS is letting off the brakes on some regulations doesn't mean it's time to hit Tunica Casinos and blow money and aerosols around. Tribes like the Choctaw have much higher rates of diabetes and obesity due to the low-price food industry creating an oligarcy in food around these lands. This is why Native Tribes have the 3rd highest per Capita death rate for COVID, up there with New York City and New Jersey beaches. I am a 25 year old male and I look to be around 16 or 18. Whenever I am in a adult area like a bar, casino, or even a sports book. People will ask me to see my ID. The most irritating part about this happened back when I was in Tunica Mississippi for a guys weekend. Every time I needed to enter the casino the security at the front would always check my ID because they think I am underage. Does it bother you when people who say you look younger than you really are?

Round 2 Castillo eats a jab. He’s trying to reach with the body jab and just eats a right on the inside, another one. Let hook off the ropes from Lipinets and Castillo backing up now. Castillo started aggressively and has paid for it early in this round. Lipinets with a right hand over the top and Castillo warned for getting behind the head with his shot. Castillo eats a short left hand. Lipinets jabs to the body, comes upstairs with the left hook. Lipinets backs him to the ropes, rips the body, hook upstairs. Castillo eats a jab and comes back with the right. Lipinets easily blocking Castillo’s offense, lands an uppercut, Castillo tries to overwhelm him and a few punches slip in. They trade jabs. Castillo no longer applying the pressure. Hard jab from Lipinets knocks Castillo’s mouthpiece out, right over the top connects.

Round 3 Castillo with a nice combination, and he lands some very nice hooks. Lipinets trying to fight with tight shots on the inside, but Castillo is landing. Lipinets with a piercing jab. Nice left and right from Lipinets. Big hook from Lipinets, right hand clubs over the top, left hook. Castillo explodes with some hooks. Lipinets short with hooks. A hard jab from Lipinets. Castillo right to the body. A right hand from Lipinets gets through the gloves. A very clean right hand from Lipinets. Castillo did not react in time to avoid that one. A hard jab from Lipinets. Lipinets patient, lands a right hand counter to the body. Not trying to over extend himself.

Round 4 Castillo has started quickly in each round and he continues again with a pair of hooks to the body. He has Lipinets on the ropes and he wings some hooks that connect to the body. Lipinets jabs. Lipinets jabs the body, Castillo slaps with the left hook. Lipinets left to the body. Castillo combination is blocked. Castillo lands a pair of big rights. Lipinets also lands his right. Lipinets with a right. A big left to the body by Lipinets. A good left hook from Lipinets. Left hook from Castillo. A big right from Lipinets, a left, big right again, pair of body shots at the bell. Lipinets come storming back in this round.

Round 5 Castillo a little more measured this round. A big right from Lipinets. Lipinets is starting to load up big shots. He eats a right hand, lands his jab. Lipinets putting his whole body into these hooks he’s landing. Lipinets with a right hand to the body, right hand upstairs. Lipinets gushing blood from above the left eyelid. Castillo with a 5 punch combination. Lipinets continues to get caught with that. Lipinets sneaks the right in, misses his left. Double left hooks for Castillo. A very nice right hand for Lipinets, set up nicely with a left. Pair of left hooks at the bell for Castillo.

Castillo still looks buzzed, Lipinets with a big right to the body, a left now. Lipinets trapping him on the ropes. Another right to the body. Castillo goes to the body tim his right hand. Lipinets brings the right hand over the shoulder. Castillo’s dropped his punch output by a lot. He’s in survival mode right now. Lipinets with a right to the body.

Round 7 Lipinets misses his right and uppercut. Castillo covering up responsibly, not wanting to get hit with any of those shots. A quick little left catches Lipinets off balance. Lipinets from the outside lands a job. Castillo hooks to the body. Lipinets jabs, lands a big right over the top and Castillo is hurt and he backs to the corner. Castillo hands up, body shots, a big right and left upstairs. Lipinets goes back to the body. He pulls back and resets. Lipinets jabs to the head, again he lands the jab. A huge right lands, big left hook, Castillo badly hurt. Lipinets with the left and right, referee jumps in to stop this.

Hey guys, thanks for indulging this post. I know there are a ton of FAQs, but I've got a unique situation and wanted to get some input. I'm switching jobs next month and have a week between, and have some money saved up so I'm going to splurge on a trip to Vegas. This will be the week of Nov 7 (election week, no less). I get off Friday the 4th, don't have to be at work until Nov 14. Money is not unlimited, but I'm also not broke, so I can splurge. I have airline miles so the flight is free (Delta), and I have enough to cover whatever day/time I want to go. I have been to Vegas once before, to Defcon, with a group from work. This will be my first time totally recreationally, and I will be by myself. I have been waffling between getting a really cheap room (places like Circus Circus has like $50 or less per night even with resort fees) or splurging and getting a "cheap" room at a really nice place like the Bellagio. I want to stay in a hotel with a casino, for sure. A long time ago I used to go to Tunica in Mississippi to gamble, so any player's card credits I might have are going to be with Harrah's/Caesar's (probably all expired though) So, I guess I'm looking for some input on that decision (where to stay: nice or cheap) Also, what would be the best days? I'm kind of zeroing in on Sunday through Thursday. Number of days isn't set it stone, but I want to have enough time to do plenty of things. I'll probably play a ton of craps, but I also want to see some other stuff (nuke museum, some pawn shops, maybe get out to the hoover dam, etc). What are going to be the best days with the best rates? Will there be shows to see during the week? This post got a little rambling towards the end, but just want to get some input from locals or regulars about getting the most out of a last minute trip, but without putting too much pressure or getting to uptight about it.
Hollywood has a reputation for producing blockbuster movies, but over the next couple of weeks another type of event is expected to take place here. Poker players are enthusiastic about the prospect of spending a couple of days participating in the Hollywood Poker Open. In 2014, the number of American players expected to attend this tournament is significantly higher than one year ago, which means that the competition will be more intense. Some of them have honed their skills over the Internet and poker rooms such as Sky Poker, but only those who reside within the borders of New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada can play legally. Things will probably change in 2015 and beyond, but for the time being live tournaments represent the highlight of the month for poker players. Season three will begin this November, in Indiana and players should jump on the bandwagon because the next stop is scheduled for February. Those who miss out on the opening event will have to wait three months, which is a long time for those who appreciate the thrills of live poker tournaments. Last season, the Hollywood Poker Open sent many players to the championship event, with a total of 200 competing for real money. Both amateurs and poker professionals are expected to attend the opening event and even more will probably participate in the tournaments scheduled for 2015. Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg in Indiana will be the gracious host for the first tournament and the registration has already begun. The number of players who announced their intention to participate is on par with the expectations, but their numbers will probably soar as kickoff draws near. There are a couple of professionals who signed up and Chris Moneymaker will be one of them, as a tournament ambassador for season three.
